Genealogy's growing popularity is, in large part, due to the efforts of Scotland's network of family history societies.

Since its foundation in 1978, the Aberdeen & NE Scotland Family History Society has recruited over 18,000 members and is now probably the largest in the country. Of these, around a third constitute its core membership, although many lapsed members rejoin. Annual membership is still only £15 which allows members to have unlimited access to our Centre's microfiche and high-magnification microfilm readers; and also networked computers, with IGIs and censuses, and quick access to the most popular genealogical websites on the Internet. Our Library contains over 2,500 books and maps, thousands of monumental inscriptions; plus many hundreds of journals from other Societies, magazines and other reference material. We have an ongoing publishing schedule, and the Bookshop contains a wide range of titles, particularly relating to Aberdeen and the NE.
